Mientras investiga un estallido toxico en el mar Caribe que podría suponer una amenaza letal para Estados Unidos, Dirk Pitt se ve envuelto sin buscarlo en una lucha por el control de Cuba en la era postCastro. Entretanto, los compañeros de Pitt llevan a cabo una investigacion por su cuenta. Siguen las pistas de una piedra azteca que puede revelar el paradero de un tesoro historico de valor incalculable. A pesar de que se cree que la piedra quedo destruida durante la batalla en el puerto de La Habana, en 1898, ellos deciden viajar hasta Cuba, el centro del peligo. La familia Pitt al completo ya ha pasado antes por situaciones desesperadas, pero quizá nunca por ninguna como esta.

The problem is, that stone was believed to have been destroyed on the battleship Maine in Havana Harbor in 1898, which brings them both to Cuba as well--and squarely into harm's way. The three of them have been in desperate situations before ... but perhaps never quite as dire as the one facing them now
