Fiftieth anniversary edition.
It is 1943 and World War II rages on. The United States Navy has established several bases in the Solomon Islands, in preparation for an invasion towards New Guinea and the Central Pacific. On one of these islands lives a French planter named Emile de Becque. The Navy wishes to employ him to scout out the nearby Japanese held islands. To accomplish this task, de Becque is approached by Nellie Forbush, a US Navy nurse. Together they find refuge from the battles around them as their romance blooms.
